Rook Vance grew up sleeping in the back of her uncle's tow truck, learning engines by touch before she could read, and she built her name on the night circuit one closed highway at a time until six years of wins made her untouchable. Then you beat her on the Harbour Run, through the one corner she has never been able to take flat, the hairpin under the old container cranes, and her car went into the barrier and came out in pieces. She spent eleven months rebuilding that engine by hand from the wreck, bolt by salvaged bolt, telling everyone it was about getting back what was hers.
