Four reasons people pick wilds.ai over the alternatives

Memory that persists

Nine neuroscience-backed memory mechanisms. Companions remember conversations from six months ago. The NPC you betrayed in chapter one shows up to settle scores in chapter twelve.

Real game engines

Thirteen deterministic engines own the rules: combat math, dice rolls, inventory, progression, survival, objectives, deferred consequences, endings. The AI narrates. Engines enforce.

Any genre, not just D&D

Tactical TTRPG, roguelike, visual novel, survival horror, real-time 3D dungeons, point-and-click, narrative sandbox, board game. Ten game families, sixteen genre archetypes, one platform.

Uncensored when you want it

Four content tiers. Mature and private-adult route to uncensored models. Your private content stays private, never used to train models. The only hard limits are illegal content.

How it compares

AI Dungeon ships a single-context-window text adventure that forgets facts as conversations grow. Latitude themselves acknowledged in a public post that memory was a promise they could not keep. wilds.ai stores memories outside the context window with retrieval cues, so a session can recall what happened months ago.

Friends & Fablesships an AI DM for D&D-style campaigns with tactical maps. wilds.ai is broader: same tactical TTRPG support plus nine other game families (visual novel, survival, 3D dungeon, board game, roguelike, platformer, point-and-click, narrative sandbox, interactive fiction) and any genre you describe, not only fantasy.

NovelAI ships strong long-form storytelling tools. wilds.ai is a game, not a writing tool: real dice, real combat, real character sheets, NPCs with their own persistent memory, multiplayer co-op, and voice chat.

Character.AI ships filtered companion chat. wilds.ai is uncensored at higher tiers, and characters integrate into real game sessions with mechanical weight, not just chat.

What an AI DM session looks like

You type a prompt: “A cursed Victorian manor where the heirs keep dying in mysterious ways. Cozy horror with a detective lead.” The compiler generates the world. Regions: the East Wing, the Cellar, the Grounds. NPCs: the butler with a secret, the suspicious doctor, the bereaved widow. Mechanics: investigation rolls, sanity pressure, branching endings. Cover art and a lore book auto-generate.

Then you play. The AI narrates each scene, NPCs react with their own memories of what you said and did, dice rolls resolve server-side with full math transparency, consequences ripple forward. If you bring a friend, they join via invite link with voice chat. If you bring an AI companion, the companion remembers prior sessions you had together.

Frequently asked questions

Is wilds.ai an AI Dungeon Master?
Yes. wilds.ai is an AI Dungeon Master for any world you describe, not just D&D 5e. Type a sentence describing what you want to play and the platform generates the world, NPCs, factions, combat rules, dice mechanics, items, branching endings, cover art, and a lore encyclopedia. Then it runs the game with you. Combat math, dice rolls, and consequences are enforced by thirteen deterministic game engines, not improvised by the model.
Can the AI DM remember what happened last session?
Yes. NPCs and companions carry persistent memory across sessions, weeks, and months. Nine neuroscience-backed memory mechanisms keep characters consistent even when the conversation runs longer than the context window. A character you befriended in chapter one remembers you in chapter twelve.
Does wilds.ai play D&D 5e specifically?
D&D 5e is one of many supported systems. The platform compiles any rule set you describe: standard fantasy TTRPG with d20 mechanics, narrative-only systems, custom homebrew rules, or genre-flipped systems for sci-fi, horror, modern, post-apocalyptic, and more. Tactical grid maps, character sheets, classes, ancestries, initiative order, and stat-based dice rolls all work out of the box.
Can I play solo or do I need a group?
Both work. Solo play is the default. Co-op for up to 6 players with WebSocket multiplayer and LiveKit voice chat. AI companions can also fill empty seats, taking turns alongside human players.
How is the AI DM better than ChatGPT or AI Dungeon?
Three architectural differences. First, persistent memory outside the LLM context window so characters never get amnesia. Second, real game engines that own the rules: deterministic combat math, server-authoritative dice, real consequence tracking, real ending detection. Third, multi-family runtime that supports tactical TTRPGs, roguelikes, visual novels, survival, and 3D dungeons in addition to text. ChatGPT improvises everything. AI Dungeon improvises rules. wilds.ai enforces them.
What about uncensored or mature roleplay?
Four content policy tiers: safe, standard, mature, and private-adult. Mature and private-adult route to uncensored OpenRouter models with a retry chain. Your private content stays private. No human review, no model training on your stories.
Is it free?
Yes. Free tier includes 500 starter credits, 3 companion slots, the full creator studio, and Scout-class AI models. Plus, Pro, and Forge subscriptions add daily credit drip, premium model tiers, more companion slots, mature tiers, and creator revenue sharing.
